Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs must be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the way of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
