The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Dynamics

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.
