Time is optimal to switch Man Utd's formation - the manager insists.

Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes was one of seven senior stars to miss the holiday period victory against Newcastle.

Head coach Ruben Amorim argues that changing Manchester United's tactical system due to external noise would have signaled "the end" for him.

For the first time against Newcastle, Amorim abandoned his usual back three formation with wide defenders and opted to field an traditional four-man defense shielded by two holding midfielders.

Amorim acknowledged this effectively transformed into a back six in the latter phase as his side held on for a win - securing just their second-ever clean sheet of the campaign.

While he once famously remarked that not even the highest authority could pressure him to adjust his system, Amorim asserts the ability to play with different setups has always been part of his strategy.

Nevertheless, he emphasizes he could only implement the change when his team were doing well enough - or else it would appear as if he was giving in to outside noise.

"When I arrived here the previous campaign, I realized perhaps I don't have the squad to play well in a back three, but it was the commencement of a process," he said.

"We were trying to forge an style. Now is a different time. We don't have a full complement of personnel, and we must adapt, so they understand why we are switching things up.

"This isn't because of the pressure of you guys, or the faithful.

"When you talk about altering the formation all the time, I can't change because the players will understand I'm altering things because of you and I feel that is a disaster for the coach.

"Only when we are playing well in our preferred setup, then is the moment to change.

"We will grow into a more complete side because when our full complement of players are back, we are not going to play with three defenders in every match."

Squad Issues Persist

Having just two victories in eight games before defeating Newcastle, it is debatable whether Amorim is correct to say his team have been in good form.

He is, though, working with a severely stretched squad, with seven senior players already ruled out for the forthcoming home game against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers.

That number will increase if playmaker Mason Mount is unable to recover the injury that forced his exit from the Newcastle game at the interval.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes is a key name who will be absent for the Wolves match, even though he is reportedly pressing his boss to let him to make a comeback following his hamstring injury.

"Fernandes is already saying he has to practice," said Amorim. "However there is absolutely no possibility he is going to play against Wolves. No chance. That's definitive."

The Captain's Leadership Endures

However, the Portuguese star will probably still be heavily involved, as whereas most injured players watch matches from a private box, Fernandes was observed keeping a close eye on the warm-ups from the entrance of the player's tunnel before the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates his leader to carry on offering guidance.

"He is a leader," he declared. "He cannot be that guy that when he is absent, he's not talking and offering advice. He's constantly speaking. That is the reason he's the captain.

"There are flaws at times - his mannerisms he gesticulates - but he has a lot of strengths. Even after he recovers, he heads to watch the other guys practicing. There are a lot of things you don't see.

"I don't know if he desires my job or not, but he's a born leader. He is a leader."

Return Timeline for Key Players

While the exact date for Fernandes' comeback - and that of other injured players like Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire - remains unknown, by the end of January, the club will see the return of Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo from international duty.
